Shadow One: "Obliterated" (June 2025) vs. the Damage Assessments

The shadow

On 21–22 June 2025 the United States struck Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, an operation named Operation Midnight Hammer. On 25 June the White House published a release whose title was the message: "Iran's Nuclear Facilities Have Been Obliterated — and Suggestions Otherwise are Fake News" (White House release, archived by the American Presidency Project). In December 2025 the National Security Strategy spoke of Iran's "defeat in the Twelve-Day War" (as quoted by Charlie Garcia, 3 January 2026).

The objects

  • Israeli intelligence, 24 June 2025: the strikes set Iran's program back "several years" but did not destroy it; early U.S. intelligence said "months." IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir: "We have set Iran's nuclear project back by years" (Times of Israel). Israel itself would not say "obliterated."
  • The Defense Intelligence Agency, June 2025: a preliminary assessment found the strikes set the program back by months, and some enriched uranium had been moved beforehand (Al Jazeera, 25 June 2025).
  • The IAEA: "no one, including the IAEA, is in a position to have fully assessed the underground damage at Fordow," while expecting it to be "very significant" (same source).
  • A later U.S. assessment, 17 July 2025: only Fordow "was mostly destroyed"; Natanz and Isfahan "may have been degraded only to a point where nuclear enrichment could resume in the next several months" (NBC News).

Why the shadow mattered later

If the program was obliterated in June 2025, there was no emergency in February 2026. People kept linking the release a year later: "Now explain why we still are at war after this statement from a year ago" (@margculbster, 22 September 2026). "I'm amazed they haven't deleted this yet" (@LibertarianRed1, 26 February 2026). "The POTUS said in June of 2025, we decimated Iran's nuclear capability. So why are we still there?" (@GatorGirlFL1, 22 August 2026).

The full damage record is on The "Obliterated" Claim and the Damage Assessments.
