Phaedrus 253c–254e: The White Horse, the Black Horse, and How the Driver Wins

The two horses described (253d–e)

"The right-hand horse is upright and cleanly made; he has a lofty neck and an aquiline nose; his colour is white, and his eyes dark; he is a lover of honour and modesty and temperance, and the follower of true glory; he needs no touch of the whip, but is guided by word and admonition only. The other is a crooked lumbering animal, put together anyhow; he has a short thick neck; he is flat-faced and of a dark colour, with grey eyes and blood-red complexion; the mate of insolence and pride, shag-eared and deaf, hardly yielding to whip and spur." — Phaedrus 253d–e, trans. Jowett (Gutenberg; Perseus, 253d)

Two details that matter for a war

The white horse is "guided by word." It obeys words, not whips. That is its virtue and its danger. Whoever supplies the words, a senator, a network, a foreign government, can steer it. See The White Horse.

The black horse is "deaf." It does not hear the record. It hears only what it wants: comfort, quiet, "it won't happen to us." See Plato's Ethics on the Black Horse.

How the driver wins (254a–e)

In the story the black horse lunges toward what it wants; the white horse holds back out of shame; the charioteer is at first overpowered, then pulls the reins "with such violence as to bring both the steeds on their haunches" (254b–c). After this happens several times, the black horse "is tamed and humbled, and follows the will of the charioteer" (254e).

Plato's story is about love and desire. The structure is what matters here: the driver wins by acting, repeatedly, not by waiting. For a parent in 2026 that means reading the record now, before December's automatic registration, and acting while the margin in the Senate is one vote. See Standing Up Without Violence.
