Joe Kent's Four Questions: How We Win, What It Costs, What We Gain, What Comes After
Joe Kent is a retired Green Beret whose wife was killed in Syria, a father of two boys, and until 17 March 2026 the director of the National Counterterrorism Center. He resigned over the Iran war (Al Jazeera, 17 March 2026). His questions are the charioteer's questions, and every parent can put them to every official who backs the war.
The resignation
His letter, archived by the American Presidency Project, said "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation," that the war began due to "pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby," and that "high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media deployed a misinformation campaign." He compared it to Iraq: "This is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war that cost our nation the lives of thousands" (Kent resignation letter). He added, as quoted by Al Jazeera: "I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people." Three days later, as quoted by Open Source Intel: "I will not in good conscience send young men and women off to die on foreign battlefields" and "we do not support this war" (thread on X, 20 March 2026). Another post summarized his view as: "the narrative & agenda spun by a foreign government- Israel, won the argument & forced us into this war" (X, 21 September 2026).
The President's answer, the same day: "I always thought he was weak on security, very weak on security" (Fox News, 17 March 2026).
The four questions
On 28 June 2026 Kent posted:
"Have any of the neocons cheering for the war to resume taken the time to explain exactly how we defeat Iran militarily, what that would cost us in terms of blood & treasure, what we gain from doing so, & what Iran looks like with no government? Please, enlighten us as to how the Bush-era war propaganda will totally work this time." — Joe Kent, about 12,600 likes (as shown in the thread at X)
The one reply captured under it read, in full: "Nobody cares what you think." That is the white horse answering the charioteer.
What the record says about each question
- How we defeat Iran militarily. An Israeli newspaper column put a ground campaign at "between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops" (JPost column). A post-war analysis noted Iran "cannot be occupied with the forces currently in theater" (Jacki Maniel, 19 March 2026).
- Blood and treasure. At least 19 U.S. service members killed and more than 750 injured by 24 September 2026 (The Guardian); an essay citing the Pentagon put costs at "at least $37.5 billion" by July (Cost to Americans).
- What we gain. In April 2026, analyst John Mearsheimer, as quoted on X: "We came into this war with four big demands... We have failed on all four counts. We have made the situation worse" (X search page, 30 April 2026).
- Iran with no government. A classified National Intelligence Council report completed a week before 28 February reportedly concluded that even a large-scale assault would not bring regime change (as described by EIR, 7 March 2026; the report itself is not public).
A parent can ask their own senator these four questions and ask for the answers in writing. See Calls and Letters to Congress.
