Calls and Letters to Congress: The One-Vote Margin on the Iran War

Only Congress can declare war, and only Congress can restart a draft. That makes your two senators and your House member the most important people in your child's future that you can actually reach. Right now the margin is one vote.

The votes on the record

  • On 24 September 2026 the Senate rejected a House-passed war powers resolution to end the Iran war 49–50. One such resolution passed in June; a July attempt failed 47–49. Senator Tim Kaine said: "We're going to keep doing them every week because we see Republican candidates out in the field now starting to change their position." Senator Dan Sullivan, voting no, said: "The war powers vote is about removing American forces from the region, and when there are troops in contact, I don't believe in doing it" (The Guardian, 24 September 2026).
  • On 16 September 2026 a widely shared post announced: "House passes resolution to remove U.S. forces from Iran and end the war. 7 Republicans joined all Democrats in voting yes" (@DemzDeliver, about 82,000 likes, thread on X). The full roll-call record is on Iran War Powers Votes.

Senator Sullivan's reason shows how a war becomes self-sustaining: once troops are in contact, ending it is framed as abandoning them. A parent's call is what breaks that loop.

Ask whether the vote was binding

A reply in the same House thread pointed out the vote was a concurrent resolution: "It will never go to the president and it's not a law... If they wanted to force it, they would have to cut the money or pass a bill he can veto." The detail is on The War Powers Vote: Was It Binding?. Ask your members whether they will vote on funding.

What to say

  • Find your senators (senate.gov) and representative (house.gov). The Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121.
  • Ask: How did you vote on the Iran war powers resolutions? Will you vote to cut off funding for ground operations in Iran? Will you vote against any bill to restart induction under the Military Selective Service Act? Will you vote to repeal automatic registration (Section 535) in the next defense bill?
  • Say it in your own name, as a parent. Joe Kent, who resigned as director of the National Counterterrorism Center over the war, urged three days later: "we need to let our leaders hear that we do not support this war" (20 March 2026, as quoted by Open Source Intel, thread on X).
  • Write it on paper too. In 1967 mothers mailed 200,000 cards in two months; a senator was photographed buried in them. See Another Mother for Peace.

Ask about the next defense bill

Activists in August 2026 were urging: "Vote NO on NDAA until section 1217 is removed. End the forever wars. Stop the escalation. No draft. Congress must reassert war powers" (X, 31 August 2026). That post does not say what Section 1217 does; ask your member's office to tell you in writing. An analysis circulating in July 2026 said Section 219 of the House FY2027 bill, H.R. 8800, would "embed Israeli technology, companies, and strategic priorities throughout the machinery of the Pentagon," "buried more than one hundred pages into a 1,614-page defense bill" (X search snippet, 20 July 2026, link). Ask your member whether they have read it.
