Conscientious Objection: The Lawful Refusal, and the Service Members Calling the Hotline in 2026

A conscientious objector is a person who, for reasons of conscience, cannot take part in war. U.S. law recognizes the status. For a young person already serving, or one who objects to all war, it is the lawful form of refusal.

The 2026 hotline

The Center on Conscience & War (centeronconscience.org) runs a hotline for service members considering conscientious objection. On 14 March 2026, two weeks into the war, it posted: "Hundreds have called our hotline. The most common thing we hear from service members and their families is that the Minab school bombing was the catalyst that turned them against the war and the military as a whole" (@CCW4COs on X). That is the group's own account of its callers.

The Minab school strike, on the war's first day, is described on The Shadows on the Wall: a U.N. fact-finding report was reported to find "reasonable grounds" to believe the United States committed war crimes in Iran.

What service members say

The Nation reported in September 2026 on service members weighing conscientious objection over the Iran war, quoting a source: "I haven't talked to any service member who said that they are scared of dying in a war that they don't believe in....They're scared of killing in a war that they don't believe in" (The Nation; post on X, 22 September 2026). For a parent, that sentence matters: the moral weight a child may carry is not only the risk to his life.

If a draft returns

Under the current self-registration system a man cannot register as an objector, but he may be able to claim that status if drafted (Wikipedia, Selective Service System). Automatic registration from December 2026 removes even the moment where a young man signs his own name. A family that wants to preserve a conscience claim should document it now: letters, religious affiliation, a record of beliefs. See If the Draft Returns.
