The Black Horse Shrug: "It's Not a Big Deal" and "There Isn't Going to Be a Draft"

Plato's black horse is "deaf, hardly yielding to whip and spur" (Phaedrus 253e). In a parent, deafness sounds like a shrug. This page collects the shrugs about the Iran war and the draft, and the one fact each skips.

"This is not a big deal"

When an account warned in July 2026 that "all American men aged 18-26 will be automatically signed up for a draft come December. This was the plan the whole time," one reply was: "Selective service (the mandatory registering for the draft) just becomes automatic, this is not a big deal" (X, 13 July 2026).

What it skips: why make the list automatic now, during a war, while the White House keeps a draft "on the table" and Selective Service shops for draft-simulation software? See Readiness Simulation.

"There isn't going to be a draft"

A video posted in December 2023, seen about 1.66 million times, carried a speaker saying: "there isn't going to be a draft... they just aren't going to go. How are you even going to notify them that they have been drafted, they don't check the mail... They are not even paying their student loans. You think they are going to go to war just because the government said so?" (@WallStreetMav, 2 December 2023).

What it skips: automatic registration answers "how will you notify them": the government already has their data. And the student-loan line is exactly where a Jerusalem Post column aimed in 2026: debt forgiveness in exchange for service (JPost column).

"There is no draft!"

On a Threads tag page in March 2026: "There is no draft!" and "Not every man wants to enter the military, and there is no draft." On the same page: "we'd need over One Million boots on the ground in Iran to functionally control the nation. We have just over one million members of the U.S. Military, period. Either a draft is coming or bloodshed to an inhuman level is coming. Or both" (Threads, military-draft tag).

What it skips: "no draft today" is true and says nothing about December.

"Only idiots believe wars are fought with boots on the ground in 2026"

A September 2026 reply to reports that Tehran was forming 1,000 battalions (X, 18 September 2026).

What it skips: the Pentagon's own ground-operation planning reported through 2026 (Pentagon Ground Plans 2026).

Expecting what you oppose, and doing nothing

In March 2026, 65% of Americans told Reuters/Ipsos they expected a large-scale ground war in Iran; only 7% supported one (Wikipedia). Expecting what you oppose, and staying quiet, is the black horse's signature. The full treatment is in Plato's Ethics on the Black Horse.
