Opinion Is Moving: Polls, a Hotline, and Families Split by Generation (2026)

When people read the record, they change sides. The Iran war polls show that happening, and they show where parents are.

The numbers

  • On the day the war began, the New York Times reported "Only 21% of Americans Support the United States Initiating an Attack on Iran" (as listed on memeorandum, 28 February 2026).
  • A 1 March Reuters/Ipsos poll: 27% support, 43% opposed, 29% unsure. NBC registered voters: 41% support, 52% opposed (Wikipedia, Reactions to the 2026 Iran war).
  • Ground war: 65% expected one, 7% supported one (Reuters/Ipsos, 17–19 March; same source).
  • Polling averages: support fell from 40% on 3 March to 34% by 18 July; opposition rose from 48% to 58% (same source).
  • A July Politico poll: Republicans wanting to keep fighting even if it raised costs for Americans fell from 46% in May to 32% (same source).
  • A Washington Post poll, as described on 2 May 2026, put those calling the war a mistake at 61% (X trending).

Lawyer Robert Barnes named the mechanism: "A reason war support tends to collapse over time is b/c at some point, reality breaks through" (X, 29 March 2026).

Among those who serve

The Center on Conscience & War, 14 March 2026: "Hundreds have called our hotline. The most common thing we hear from service members and their families is that the Minab school bombing was the catalyst that turned them against the war and the military as a whole" (@CCW4COs).

Among MAGA voters who were promised no new wars

"I didn't want war with Iran for Israel. I don't care about Iran, I care about Indiana. AMERICA FIRST!" (X, 28 February 2026). A July 2026 X summary described "Old campaign clips of leaders decrying foreign wars" resurfacing and libertarians like Dave Smith calling the war "a betrayal of 'America First' pledges against new wars" (X trending, 24 July 2026). Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, as described by Grok in September 2026, accused the President of "betraying America First via foreign wars (Iran, Venezuela)" and said "he's betrayed us all" (X, 8 September 2026).

Families split by generation

A National Iranian American Council survey with Zogby found Iranian-Americans divided in the war's first week: 49.3% opposed the U.S. starting it, 48.9% supported it (X trending, 10 March 2026). One commenter: "I have many family members mostly elders that are in full support of this war. It's tearing our family apart because the younger generations are not in support of this war" (Zeteo comments, 1 April 2026). A war can put the white horse and the charioteer at the same dinner table.
