"Send Their Sons and Daughters": Senator Graham's Honor Appeal and the Answer From His Own State

Plato's white horse is honor, loyalty, duty. A politician who wants a family to support a war speaks to that horse. In March 2026 one senator did so in plain words.

The appeal

In a Fox News interview about the Iran war, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said: "I'm going back to South Carolina, I am asking them to send their sons and daughters to the Mideast. What I want you to do in the Mideast, my friends in Saudi Arabia and other places, step forward and say this is my fight too" (KATV/Sinclair, March 2026). Elsewhere he called the strikes "in the nick of time" (as quoted in Wikipedia, Reactions to the 2026 Iran war).

A news roundup in July 2026 carried a headline attributed to the Wall Street Journal: "Exclusive | Unreleased Documentary Footage Captures Graham's Obsessive Push for Iran War" (News Hub on X, 26 July 2026). The footage itself was not opened for this page.

A veteran of the post-9/11 wars had already answered this kind of appeal in 2024, calling a senator's call to attack Iran "false, patriotic bravado," and adding: "It's not him or his kids dying and getting maimed in combat... (YOU enlist if you're so gung-ho for war.)" (@samosaur, 29 January 2024).

The answer from the same state and party

Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) asked what would "possess anyone to say this?" and said: "I do not want to send South Carolina's sons and daughters into war with Iran" (same KATV report). Days later she said the public justification and the classified briefing did not match (The Briefing Gap).

What the appeal leaves out

An appeal to send "sons and daughters" is an appeal to spirit. It does not supply what the charioteer needs: what the war is for, whether Congress authorized it (it did not), what it has cost (19 dead by September), and at whose request the U.S. entered it (the State Department's lawyer says Israel's: "At the Request of" Israel). Nor does it say whose sons. See Whose Children Go?
