Whose Children? The Question Asked About Iran in 2004, 2019, 2020, and 2024
The push for war with Iran did not begin in 2026, and neither did the parents' question. Every time a war with Iran came close, Americans asked whose children would fight it, and whether a draft would follow.
2004: "it won't have enough manpower"
A letter in the Commonwealth Times quoted the Wichita Eagle: "The Bush administration is hinting that if Bush is re-elected, the use of military force to overthrow the government of Iran wouldn't be out of the question. But it won't have enough manpower unless Little Caesar Bush reinstates the draft" (Commonwealth Times, 31 August 2004). Iran was on the list then too: retired General Wesley Clark later described a post-9/11 Pentagon memo naming seven countries in five years, ending with Iran (The Post-9/11 Pentagon Country List).
2019: "clamoring to send your kids"
"Be wary of all the pundits and politicians who are clamoring to send your kids to fight a war with Iran but will never enlist or send their own kids. They did the same in Iraq & Afghanistan" (Wajahat Ali, 16 June 2019). The same month, a Reddit thread was titled "The Vietnam War was based on a lie. The Iraq War was based on lies. We cannot allow Trump to drag us into war with Iran" (r/SandersForPresident, 19 June 2019).
2020: the Soleimani strike
After the U.S. killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani: "We are seeing Republicans and Trump's media allies cheering for a war with Iran. None of their children will fight that war" (Dean Obeidallah, 8 January 2020). Writer Greg Olear: "My kids (15 & 13) are now, based purely on their own social media forays, very concerned about a military draft" (X, 5 January 2020). One poster in 2020 asked why the "patriotic" shock jocks who "bragged" they would enlist if the U.S. went to war with Iran were not "on the front" (@OberstWKlink, 25 September 2020).
2024: "it's not him or his kids"
A post-9/11 veteran called a senator's call to attack Iran "false, patriotic bravado": "It's not him or his kids dying and getting maimed in combat... (YOU enlist if you're so gung-ho for war.)" (@samosaur, 29 January 2024). A retired Air Force staff sergeant: "it's so much easier when they send other parent's kids over to die on a foreign shore" (X, 12 April 2024). In April 2024, when Iran fired on Israel, Americans "panic-searched" "Can I Be Drafted" (headline, Renegade Tribune).
What changed in 2026
In each earlier scare no draft came, and nothing changed on paper. In 2026 the war came, and something did change on paper: a signed law that makes registration automatic, and a Selective Service request for draft-simulation software. See Draft Rumors vs. the Record.
