The $636 Million Bill: Four of Five Dollars Defended Israel
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED. The figures come from a Pentagon budget reprogramming document dated August 1, 2025, reported by The War Zone and WION.
When the Pentagon uses up weapons, it asks Congress for permission to move money to replace them. That paperwork is one of the few places the public can see what a war actually cost. For the twelve-day war, the paperwork tells a story most Americans never heard: most of the money went to defending Israel, not to the American strike.
The line items
From the Pentagon's reprogramming request (The War Zone, updated September 16, 2025; WION):
| Item | Amount | Share |
|---|---|---|
| THAAD interceptors fired to defend Israel | about $498.3 million | about 78% |
| 14 GBU-57 bunker-busters on Fordow and Natanz | about $123 million | about 19% |
| Temporary lodging and support for US personnel | about $9.9 million | |
| Laser-guided rockets | about $3.3 million | |
| Small Diameter Bombs | about $2.3 million | |
| Total | about $636 million |
What is not in it
- The flying hours of seven B-2s on a roughly 37-hour round trip and more than 125 support aircraft.
- The Tomahawk cruise missiles fired at Isfahan.
- The ships, fighters and air-defense batteries moved into the region before and during the war.
- An open-source estimate put the strike package alone above $200 million (The Center Square).
What else America sent Israel in 2025
In the same year, according to a September 2026 summary, the United States approved a $2.04 billion package for Israel including 35,529 MK-84 and BLU-117 bombs and 4,000 penetrator munitions (as stated in a post by @Truthtellerftm; we have not opened the underlying notice). That is on top of the interceptors spent in Israel's defense.
What it means
About four of every five dollars on the Pentagon's bill for the twelve days paid for shooting down Iranian missiles aimed at Israel. The war Israel started was, in cash terms, mostly an American defense of Israel. And the interceptors bought back with that money were not available for American forces when the next war came.
