← The Iraq WMD Precedent

The 2003 Case, Claim by Claim

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED. The claims and their failure are documented by official US and British inquiries.

A reader under forty may not remember how the Iraq war was sold. Each claim below was presented as certain. None held up. Each has a match in 2025.

The claims

Claim, 2002–2003What was foundThe 2025 match
The October 2002 National Intelligence Estimate said Iraq had "up to 500 tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, sarin, and VX" (LegalClarity)The Iraq Survey Group, about 1,400 specialists, found no active programs; Duelfer Report, September 30, 2004"10 to 15 nuclear weapons" of material (Israel's government, June 2025)

Details on the NIE, the Survey Group and Duelfer are summarized by LegalClarity; the British dossier and Niger lines are as preserved in the research captures.

What the inspectors said, then

  • Scott Ritter, former UN inspector, 2002: "since 1998 Iraq has been fundamentally disarmed: 90-95% of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capacity has been verifiably eliminated" (as quoted in the research captures).
  • A UN inspector who served in Iraq in 2002–2003 wrote during the June 2025 war that Cheney and Rumsfeld "were all over the media claiming 'We KNOW where the weapons are', we never found a shred of evidence" (as preserved in the research captures).

In both wars, the UN's inspectors said there was no weapons program. In both wars, the inspectors were set aside. See Grossi's Statements.

What the official inquiry found

"The Intelligence Community was dead wrong in almost all of its pre-war judgments about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. This was a major intelligence failure." And: "after ten years of effort, the Intelligence Community still had no good intelligence on the status of Iraq's weapons programs" (Robb–Silberman commission, 2005, as quoted by Newsmax and LegalClarity). The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the office Tulsi Gabbard led in 2025, was created in 2004 because of the Iraq intelligence failures (research captures).

That office's job was to make sure it did not happen again. In March 2025 it told Congress Iran was not building a bomb. Three months later, America bombed Iran.

Who was in the room, in both cases

Benjamin Netanyahu testified to the US House on September 12, 2002: "There is no question whatsoever that Saddam is seeking, is working, is advancing towards the development of nuclear weapons," and "If you take out Saddam, Saddam's regime, I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations on the region." That testimony is covered in full on Netanyahu's 2002 Testimony. In June 2025 he led the war on Iran, and called America's entry "the fruit of a diplomatic campaign I led."

Status: Condoleezza Rice, Scott Ritter, Eric Herring, Piers Robinson and Benjamin Netanyahu are alive, as far as these sources show. Donald Rumsfeld is deceased (2021).
