The Week of the Strikes: What the Press Reported About the Intelligence
Evidence rating: STRONG. CNN, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal each reported, citing officials, that the US intelligence judgment had not changed. A senator on the Foreign Relations Committee said the same about his own briefing.
Between Israel's attack on June 13 and the American strikes on June 22, 2025, three of America's largest news organizations reported that the intelligence did not support the claim that Iran was racing to a bomb. The reports were public. The war went ahead anyway.
What the three outlets reported
- CNN, June 17: "not only was Iran not actively pursuing a nuclear weapon, it was also up to three years away from being able to produce and deliver one to a target of its choosing, according to four people familiar with the assessment" (CNN, as quoted by The Column).
- New York Times, June 19: "None of the new assessments on the timeline to get a bomb are based on newly collected intelligence, according to multiple officials" (NYT, Julian E. Barnes).
- Wall Street Journal: Israel "built its case for war with Iran on new intelligence" that the United States "didn't buy" (as summarized by The Column). A later summary of the Journal's June 17 reporting said the Director of National Intelligence had discounted Israeli-supplied evidence (per the research captures).
Where the "new" evidence came from
The case that Iran had resumed weapons work came from Israel. The Jerusalem Post reported that "much of the IAEA report is based on evidence from the Mossad" (as quoted in a June 21, 2025 post). That same post, written to argue the danger was real, conceded that the June 2025 IAEA report "fell short of validating newer Israeli intelligence claims." The Economist reported on a secret Iranian "Special Progress Group" (same post). None of this was a US intelligence finding that Iran had started building a bomb.
Former counterterrorism chief Joe Kent later described the gap in one sentence: "All 18 of America's intelligence agencies agreed — Iran had no capacity to develop a nuclear bomb. But Israel was telling us they would be able to assemble ten bombs in two weeks" (video, @allenanalysis). See Joe Kent's Resignation.
A senator's briefing
Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was quoted after the strikes as saying: "Last week, I was briefed that Iran posed no imminent threat and wasn't close to building a nuclear weapon, and that the negotiations Israel disrupted could have succeeded" (as quoted in a compilation by @lamps_apple). Note the last clause: "the negotiations Israel disrupted." A sixth round of US–Iran talks was scheduled for June 15. Israel attacked on June 13. See Before the War.
What television told Americans instead
On June 2, eleven days before the war, Fox News host Mark Levin told viewers Iran had "enough enriched uranium for 10 nuclear weapons," and: "These warheads aren't just aimed at Israel. They're aimed at you, me, and our grandchildren" (as quoted by @f_leclerc20037). There were no warheads. The intelligence community had said Iran was not building any.
On the Sunday after the strikes, Secretary of State Rubio called the intelligence question "irrelevant" on CBS's Face the Nation and said Iran had "everything they need to build the weapon" (CBS, as preserved in the research captures). When the facts did not support the case, the facts were declared beside the point.
Why it matters
In 2002 and 2003, many Americans later said they had not been told the Iraq intelligence was weak. In June 2025, they were told, by CNN, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, in the same week. The difference this time was not that the information was hidden. It was that it was set aside. See The Iraq WMD Precedent.
Status: Chris Murphy, Mark Levin, Marco Rubio, Joe Kent and Julian E. Barnes are alive, as far as these sources show.
