← The "Obliterated" Claim

Later US Assessments: From "Obliterated" to "One of Three"

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED. Each assessment below is an on-the-record statement by a US agency or official, or a report by a major outlet citing US officials.

After the fight over the DIA leak, the government's own estimates kept shifting. Read in order, they tell a simple story: the damage was real, it was less than "obliterated," and within a year the same officials were describing Iran as close to a bomb again, which became the reason for a second war.

The sequence

DateWhoWhat they said
June 22, 2025Gen. Dan CaineThe operation was "designed to severely degrade" Iran's nuclear infrastructure; final assessment "will take some time" (NYT)
June 24, 2025DIA (leaked)Delayed "by less than six months" (see DIA page)
June 25, 2025CIA Director John Ratcliffe"a body of credible intelligence indicates Iran's Nuclear Program has been severely damaged," with key facilities that "would have to be rebuilt over the course of years" (CIA; Jerusalem Post)
July 2, 2025Pentagon spokesman Sean ParnellSet back "probably closer to two years" (Times of Israel; Military Times)
July 17, 2025New US assessment, per NBCThe strikes "destroyed only one of three" sites; Natanz and Isfahan could resume enrichment "in the next several months" (NBC News)
February 2026Envoy Steve Witkoff, on FoxIran "probably a week away from having industrial-grade bomb-making material" (@shanaka86)
March 18, 2026DNI Tulsi Gabbard, to the Senate"Iran's nuclear enrichment program was obliterated. There has been no efforts since then to try to rebuild their enrichment capability" (TIME; Al Jazeera)
April 12, 2026Vice President Vance"The enrichment facilities that they had before — they've been destroyed" (as posted by Michael Rothman, per the research captures)
May 4, 2026President Trump"If we left right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild" (Rothman)

The contradiction in plain words

Put the February and March 2026 lines side by side. The President's envoy said Iran was a week from bomb material. The Director of National Intelligence said the enrichment program had been obliterated and not rebuilt. They cannot both be true. As one February 2026 viral post asked about Witkoff's claim: "does that mean Operation Midnight Hammer didn't actually hammer anything?" (@MarioNawfal, February 22, 2026).

The pattern is the one Americans saw before the Iraq war. The threat was large when a war needed selling, and destroyed when a war needed to look won. See The Iraq WMD Precedent.

What the Institute for Science and International Security found

The Institute for Science and International Security, the Washington group most often cited by officials on Iran's program, put the damage site by site: about 75 percent at the main Natanz plant, 95 percent at Natanz research and development, 90 percent at the Isfahan conversion plant, and 30 percent at Fordow (as summarized by Michael Rothman, May 4, 2026). The one site that needed American bombs was the least damaged.

A former counterterrorism chief's verdict

Joe Kent, who ran the National Counterterrorism Center, said on Fox in May 2026: "One of the many tragedies of this war is that before the war began, the U.S. Intel Community, including the CIA, was in agreement that Iran wasn't developing a nuclear weapon" (as posted by @IraninJapan, May 9, 2026). See Joe Kent's Resignation.

Status: Dan Caine, John Ratcliffe, Sean Parnell, Steve Witkoff, Tulsi Gabbard, JD Vance, Donald Trump and Joe Kent are alive, as far as these sources show.
