What this video shows

John Teichert is a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general and former combat pilot. On March 2, 2026, only days into the American bombing of Iran, Al Arabiya English asked him the question many viewers were already asking: can this be done without American ground troops? The anchor puts it plainly: "you think this can be done just to press you on this point without boots on the ground?"

Teichert does not rule ground troops out. He answers with the goal, not a limit. He says it is "our absolute intent" to "shred the ability of Iran to defend itself, and then, ultimately, to project power." He explains that Israel began tearing down Iran's air defenses during the 12-day war the summer before, and that once those defenses are gone the United States and its partners will have a "permissive environment" to strike targets "across the country." He predicts "more aggressive activity" to come.

Note what the clip shows. Three days into the war, the ground-troop question was already on air, and a retired general answered it by describing a campaign whose stated aim was to take apart Iran's whole ability to fight, a goal with no clear stopping point. That is the path the rest of this section follows, from "no boots on the ground" toward open talk of American soldiers on Iranian soil.

Where this fits: this clip is one of the TV clips calling for American boots on the ground in Iran. For the full story, what the public was told next to what was happening, see American Soldiers on the Ground in Iran — Videos.

Right, and you think this can be done just to press you on this point without boots on the ground? I think it is our absolute intent and is possible to shred the ability of Iran, to defend itself, and then, ultimately, to project power, and maybe something to amplify here, Tom, is the fact that Israel started a campaign last summer during those 12 days to shred the Iranian air defenses. We're revisiting some of those defenses, but once they are gone, then it provides a permissive environment for the United States and our allies and partners to regularly go after target sets across the country that could project power. And I think now that we have this widespread air superiority or supremacy, then you're gonna start to see more aggressive activity, maybe being launched from some of our golf partners, to strike all of the targets that allow Iran to project power.
