← Who Pushed the Iran War
Narrative Control and Censorship in the Iran War
To take a country to war that most of its people oppose, it is not enough to win over the President and Congress. The public has to be kept from seeing clearly what is happening, who wants it, and what it costs. This page is about how that was done in the Iran war: reporters pushed out of the Pentagon, dissenting intelligence labeled the work of a "low-level loser," leakers threatened with jail, and, from outside, a foreign government paying for influence campaigns aimed at American voters and lawmakers.
This investigation's owner puts it as a central claim: the public is told nothing is happening. Plato's allegory of the cave describes people who see only the shadows projected on the wall in front of them and take them for reality (see Plato's cave). Narrative control is the business of casting the shadows.
Two sides of the same effort
From inside the U.S. government, the record shows restriction of the press and punishment of those who told the public what officials would not:
- In October 2025, months before the second war, at least 30 news organizations, including Fox News, CNN, the New York Times, the Associated Press, and Newsmax, gave up their Pentagon press credentials rather than accept new rules restricting reporters to approved information; only One America News accepted (Wikipedia, 2025 Pentagon press pass forfeiture). Then, "As the United States wages Trump's war with Iran, the Defense Department has just designated its press office a classified space and banned journalists from accessing it" (captured X search page, June 2026). The war was covered by a press corps locked out of the building.
- When an early Defense Intelligence Agency assessment found the June 2025 strikes had set Iran back only months, the White House called the source "an anonymous, low-level loser in the intelligence community"; two months later the DIA chief was removed.
- When reporters revealed the munitions stockpile was depleted, the President denied it, called the stockpile "unlimited," and vowed to hunt down and jail "leakers."

From Israel's government, the record shows paid influence operations aimed at Americans:
- The Israeli government paid American firms and figures under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, including a contract reported at about $6 million to the President's former campaign manager Brad Parscale, $700,000 to a Christian Zionist group that lobbied more than 100 congressional offices, and payments to influencers reported at about $7,000 per post.
- An Israeli government campaign, "at its peak," used "hundreds of fake accounts that posed as real Americans on X, Facebook and Instagram," targeting members of Congress, according to a New York Times report cited by CAIR (CAIR, September 23, 2026).
- Vice President JD Vance said in July 2026 that some in Israel's government were "manipulating and trying to change American public opinion to keep the war going on indefinitely" through "this very discreet, extremely well-funded campaign" (BBC, July 16, 2026).

Selective truth from the intelligence chiefs
In March 2026 the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, submitted written testimony saying that after the June 2025 strikes "there have been no efforts since then to try to rebuild their enrichment capability," but left that line out of her televised remarks. Senator Mark Warner accused her of omitting parts that "contradict Trump." Asked whether the intelligence community had judged there was an imminent nuclear threat, she said: "The only person who can determine what is and is not an imminent threat is the president." (Al Jazeera, March 18, 2026). The public heard the President's case; the written record said otherwise. See intelligence versus the public case.
What the public was shown
Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene noticed early how the war was presented: viewers could "watch the Israel Iran war on tv everyday but you could never see the Ukraine Russia war on tv" (Greene on X, June 20, 2025). Steve Bannon accused Fox News of "pro-war propaganda" (Carlson on X, June 16, 2025). Joe Kent described how the President was surrounded: "an entire ecosystem in the media, people like Mark Levin, Fox News. You have think tanks like the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies that's constantly putting so-called experts on Fox News, the programs they know the President is consuming." (Going Underground on X, September 26, 2026). And the Pentagon's damage was hidden: service members who gave CBS photos of damaged bases "said the damage had not been communicated to the American public" (@SMO_VZ on X, September 16, 2026).
Critics labeled as enemies
The other tool of narrative control is the label. Those who said Israel's government pushed the war were called antisemitic (Kent), "kooky" (Carlson), "traitor" (Greene). In July 2026, pro-war activist Laura Loomer urged Americans: "if you suspect someone you know in the US is working on behalf of Iran or any other adversary during a time of war, you can and should report them to the FBI and DOJ. It's the America First thing to do." (captured X search page). In August 2026 a federal judge ruled that using immigration law to revoke visas or pursue deportation over pro-Palestinian advocacy or criticism of Israel violated the First and Fifth Amendments (Randy Ferrell on X, September 2, 2026).
Asking for the record
The watchdog American Oversight said on April 4, 2026: "The Trump administration has offered conflicting justifications for its war in Iran. We need to know how the admin is justifying its strikes on Iran behind closed doors. We FOIAed DOD for talking points prepared for Congressional briefings and DOD press offices." (American Oversight on X). Citizens can do the same.
