← Who Pushed the Iran War

Netanyahu's Thirty-Year Campaign for American Action on Iran

Benjamin Netanyahu is the Prime Minister of Israel. He first held the job from 1996 to 1999 and has led the country for most of the years since 2009. If you only know that American bombers hit Iran, start here: the man leading Israel has been asking the United States to confront Iran, in public, for more than thirty years. He asked Presidents Bush, Obama, and Biden, and they said no. He asked President Trump, and in June 2025 American B-2 bombers struck Iran. In February 2026 he pitched a larger war in the White House Situation Room, and America went to war again.

This is not an outside accusation. Israel's own newspapers reported it, in his government's favor. The Jerusalem Post wrote on the day of the June 2025 strikes that Netanyahu and his adviser Ron Dermer "worked tirelessly, spoke with everyone, and in the end succeeded in convincing the US administration to get involved." And when the U.S. State Department's lawyers wrote down the legal basis for the 2026 war, the first reason they gave was that America entered "at the request of" Israel.

The pattern is one campaign with one goal: Iran's government brought down, and American power doing the work. This page tells the story in order and links down to a page for each chapter.

Chapter 1: Warnings, 1992 to 2012

In 1992, as a member of Israel's parliament, Netanyahu said Iran was "three to five years" from a nuclear bomb and that the threat had to be "uprooted" by an international effort led by the United States. He repeated "three to five years" in a 1995 book, told American officials in 2009 that Iran was "probably one or two years away," and in 2012 drew a red line across a cartoon bomb at the United Nations (The Intercept, March 2, 2015; UN News, September 27, 2012). Every deadline passed without an Iranian bomb. The demand that America act never changed.

Chapter 2: "I guarantee you" (2002)

On September 12, 2002, as a private citizen, Netanyahu testified to a House committee for invading Iraq: "If you take out Saddam's regime, I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations on the region." In the same testimony he named Iran: "Obviously, we'd like to see a regime change. At least I would in Iran, just as I would like to see in Iraq" (C-SPAN; C-SPAN, second clip). The Iraq war that followed cost about 4,500 American lives. The second target he named in 2002 is the one bombed in 2025 and 2026.

Chapter 3: Going to Congress over a President's head (2015, 2024)

In March 2015 he addressed Congress against President Obama's nuclear deal with Iran: "This is a bad deal. It's a very bad deal" (Time transcript). In July 2024 he told Congress: "We don't just defend Israel, we defend the United States. Our enemies are your enemies. Our battle is your battle. Our victory is your victory" (Sprinter Press on X, video). In September 2026 he told the United Nations that destroying Iran's nuclear sites was "one of the easiest decisions" he had made.

Chapter 4: Three Presidents said no

Former Secretary of State John Kerry said in April 2026 that Netanyahu brought attack plans to the three Presidents before Trump. The Jerusalem Post reported: "According to Kerry, Netanyahu had presented presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden with plans to attack Iran, all of whom refused, before Trump agreed." Kerry described "a basically four-point pitch, saying that they could kill the leadership, they could incite a change of regime etcetera, they would destroy the military," and added, "the fact is that there was no imminent threat" (Jerusalem Post, April 12, 2026). In 2009 Obama said publicly he was "absolutely not" giving Israel a green light (CNN). When a President said no, Israel did not strike Iran's nuclear sites. American participation was the point.

Chapter 5: June 2025, nine days from "not involved" to B-2s

Israel attacked Iran on June 13, 2025. That night Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: "Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran" (White House on X). The same day two Israeli officials told Axios: "We had a clear US green light" (Axios). The next day Israeli officials told i24NEWS they were "asking them to join an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities" (GeoInsider on X). On June 16, Axios reported Israel had asked for the bunker-busters only America has, and "A second American official confirmed that Israel had requested US involvement" (Global Village Space). On June 22, American B-2s struck Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, and the Jerusalem Post reported:

"Trump only planned to bomb the enrichment facility in Fordow." ... "Netanyahu and Dermer managed to convince Trump also to target the Isfahan facility 'to finish the job.'" ... "Netanyahu and Dermer worked tirelessly, spoke with everyone, and in the end succeeded in convincing the US administration to get involved."

Chapter 6: The Situation Room pitch (February 2026)

After a December 2025 meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Netanyahu came to the White House on February 11, 2026. According to the New York Times, as carried by Israel's own papers, he gave an hour-long Situation Room presentation arguing Iran's missiles could be destroyed in weeks and the regime was ripe for collapse. CIA Director John Ratcliffe called the regime-change forecast "farcical"; Rubio said, "In other words, it's bullshit"; Trump answered, "Sounds good to me" (Times of Israel; Jerusalem Post). Netanyahu handed Trump "critical intelligence" on February 23, and the final order came on February 27, as Oman's foreign minister was announcing a diplomatic breakthrough. Even the pro-war magazine Commentary conceded that "Israeli intelligence... did help persuade Trump to launch the second Iran war when he did" (Commentary, April 2026). The Stimson Center concluded that "allies, specifically Israel and Saudi Arabia, are a but-for cause" of the war (Stimson, August 3, 2026).

Chapter 7: "At the request of" Israel

On April 21, 2026, the State Department's legal adviser, Reed Rubinstein, wrote that the United States entered the war "at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally, as well as in the exercise of the United States' own inherent right of self-defense." Snopes rated the claim True (Snopes, April 30, 2026). On March 2, the White House posted Rubio saying: "we knew that there was going to be an Israeli action, we knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces" (@RapidResponse47 on X, video). Trump's own counterterrorism chief, Joe Kent, resigned saying "we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby" (Al Jazeera).

When the war went badly, the story changed. In March Netanyahu called it "fake news" that "Israel somehow dragged the U.S. into a conflict with Iran" (X news summary); in August Rubio told a reporter "That's not true" when reminded of his own explanation (video). Those denials sit against the Jerusalem Post's "convinced," the State Department's "at the request of," and Rubio's own March 2 clip.

Chapter 8: Waiting for the green light (2026)

Once the war began, Israel's leaders kept describing American permission as the deciding factor. On April 23, 2026, Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military was ready to renew the war and "Israel is awaiting the green light from the United States" (The Informant on X). In June, as a U.S.-Iran deal neared, Israel struck Iran against Trump's request, then paused at his request. In July, CNN reported "Israel is seeking authorization from Trump to imminently resume Israeli attacks on Iran" (X news summary of CNN). Vice President JD Vance said some in Israel's government were running "this very discreet, extremely well-funded campaign to try to derail the negotiation" and "keep the war going on indefinitely" (BBC, July 16, 2026).

Why this matters to an American family

Netanyahu's 1992 demand was that the United States lead. His 2024 message to Congress was "Our battle is your battle." Israeli officials today openly discuss American soldiers fighting on Iranian soil while Israel does not send its own infantry (see American soldiers on the ground in Iran), and Congress is rebuilding the machinery of a draft (see the forced draft law). The same man who guaranteed "enormous positive reverberations" from Iraq in 2002 sold the 2026 war with a forecast the CIA Director called "farcical." The larger map behind the campaign is in Greater Israel.
