The Epstein Files and the February 2026 Timing

In the winter of 2025 to 2026, two stories were building at the same time: the release of the government's Epstein files, and the countdown to a second war on Iran. On February 28, 2026, the war began, and the Epstein story disappeared from the front pages. This page lays out the dates, the fight over the files, and what the files themselves say about Iran.

The fight to release the files

In 2025 a small bipartisan group in the House forced a vote to release the Justice Department's Epstein files, using a discharge petition (a procedure that lets a majority of members bring a bill to the floor over leadership's objection). Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia were among the four Republicans who signed. According to the newsletter Tangle, Greene "was one of four House Republicans to vote with Democrats to force a vote on the release of the Epstein files, a measure that eventually passed both chambers of Congress" (Tangle summary via Facebook reel).

Greene says the President fought her on it personally. In May 2026 she said he called her from the White House:

"Marjorie, you're going to have to take your name off that discharge petition... This is a hoax. It's a Democrat hoax and we've got to just put this away and stop doing this."

And: "He said his friends would get hurt if we released the Epstein files." "He said 'Marjorie, these are good people. These are people you know at Mar-a-Lago. People in Palm Beach. They're going to get hurt by this.'" (Latin Times, May 6, 2026). She says she first made the "friends" claim in December 2025. She has also said she "had to fight President Trump to release the Epstein files, and to this day no one has been arrested."

In a May 3, 2026 speech in Texas, Greene alleged that the 43-day government shutdown of October 1 to November 12, 2025 was designed to prevent a House vote on releasing the files (X news summary, May 6, 2026). That is her allegation.

Both Republicans who led the petition were then driven out: Massie lost his primary in May 2026 after record spending against him, much of it pro-Israel money, and Greene resigned after threats against her son (see Thomas Massie and the pressure on Greene). One summary from August 2026 put the pattern in one line: "Trump turned on them when they signed the Epstein files discharge petition" (@Trap_12G on X, August 25, 2026).

The analyst who compiled the sequence concluded that "the chronology underneath that claim is real and unusually tight," and that "on February 28 an enormous U.S.-Israel-Iran war story displaced much of America's available news attention" (Matthew J. Reynolds on X, September 21, 2026). An ordinary American watching that week put it in plain words the day the bombs fell: "Why did The Clinton's testimony happen the same day that Israel and the USA bombed Iran? Are they closing out the 'Epstein chapter' with a bang, some grand final lies, and a war? Congress and Americans are about to learn how little control they have." (@JoetheCornell on X, February 28, 2026).

What Americans concluded

A poll reported in March 2026, as summarized on X, found that "half of the American public believes the US went to war with Iran to distract from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and that Trump is taking orders directly from Netanyahu instead of serving the American people" (captured search summary; the pollster was not named). Former Rep. Greene said in June 2026 that she now "strongly suspects" the President appears in unreleased files: "Possibly. I, of course, can't say for sure. And I wouldn't say that. But, given his behavior and how hard he's fought to stop the files—and the files still haven't been released—I think one could come to that conclusion. Or question it." (interview with Stephen A. Smith, as summarized in an X news summary, June 27, 2026).

Iran's government noticed too. Its state media and allied networks pushed the Epstein-distraction theme, according to the Washington Post, as quoted on Democratic Underground, March 10, 2026. In June 2026 Iran's security chief Ali Larijani claimed that "the remnants of the Epstein team" were planning an attack (a truncated report, @Intel3punto14 on X, June 28, 2026). A foreign government's use of an argument says nothing about whether it is true; Americans reached the same question on their own.

What the files say about Iran

Two documents from the Justice Department release touch Iran directly:

  • EFTA01211330 (Data Set 9) contains December 2018 iMessages in which, according to a summary, Epstein speculated about the President "potentially provoking conflict (e.g., bombing Iran) if feeling cornered" (Grok summary, March 1, 2026; DOJ link). In other words, seven years before the war, a man at the center of the network imagined an Iran war as the move of a cornered President.
  • EFTA00741404 concerns Epstein's interest in a 1979 CIA-Iran story, per Mike Benz (Benz on X, February 1, 2026).

A widely shared but unsourced post in March 2026 claimed the Justice Department had "admitted 47,635 Epstein files including Trump allegations, were deleted after the war with Iran started" (captured X search page, no author or link). No document for that claim was found; it is recorded as a claim to check.

What a citizen can ask for

  • The complete, unredacted Epstein files, which the Justice Department itself says are incomplete.
  • Any intelligence file on foreign-service contact with Epstein, including the FBI source report on Robert Maxwell.
  • A plain answer from every member of Congress: did the Epstein files, or the people named in them, have any role in the decision to go to war on February 28, 2026?

Status: Jeffrey Epstein — Deceased (2019). Marjorie Taylor Greene, Thomas Massie, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Rahm Emanuel, Ali Larijani, Mike Benz, and Matthew J. Reynolds are alive. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
