"At the Request of" Israel: The U.S. Government's Own Words

When a government goes to war, its lawyers have to write down why. That legal paper is the most careful statement a government makes, because it has to hold up before Congress, courts, and the United Nations. For the 2026 war on Iran, the U.S. State Department's lawyers wrote that the United States entered the war "at the request of" its Israeli ally. The Secretary of State said on camera that America struck because it "knew that there was going to be an Israeli action." This page collects the U.S. government's own words on why it went to war, and sets the later denials next to them.

On April 21, 2026, the State Department's legal adviser, Reed Rubinstein, signed a legal opinion on the basis for the war. The fact-checking site Snopes examined the claim that an official U.S. document said America entered "at the request of" Israel, and rated it True. As Snopes quoted the opinion, the United States entered the war:

"at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally, as well as in the exercise of the United States' own inherent right of self-defense."

Snopes also noted a March 10, 2026 letter to the United Nations from U.S. Ambassador Michael Waltz saying the operations were "being conducted in close cooperation with, and in the collective self-defense of Israel" (Snopes, April 30, 2026; linked on X by Dave Agar, May 1, 2026).

Collective self-defense is the legal idea, from Article 51 of the UN Charter, that a country may fight to defend an ally. In plain words: the first reason the government's lawyers gave was Israel's request. Lists circulating widely on X in May and June 2026 summarized it as "the recent Iran war was launched at Israel's direct request" (Wayne Waldrop on X, June 4, 2026, 143,000 views; also May 4, 2026). That wording is a paraphrase; the opinion's exact words are the ones above.

Rubio on camera: "we knew that there was going to be an Israeli action"

On March 2, 2026, two days into the war, the White House's own rapid-response account posted Secretary of State Marco Rubio explaining the decision:

"The president made the very wise decision — we knew that there was going to be an Israeli action, we knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces, and we knew that if we didn't preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties."

Source: @RapidResponse47 on X, March 2, 2026, video. The progressive research site DemLabs summed up what that means: "The administration's rationale was framed in terms of timing and force protection, not in terms of an independent American casus belli." Citing the Washington Post via War on the Rocks, it added that the decision "was not whether to fight but whether to strike alongside Israel or wait until Iran retaliated against American forces in the region. The choice was not between war and peace. It was between two pathways into the same war" (DemLabs, March 16, 2026, as captured from its search snippet). A casus belli is the event or reason that justifies a war.

Mondoweiss ran the headline "Rubio confirms the heresy: the U.S. went to war in Iran because of Israel" (Mondoweiss, March 2026; the article was not opened). And the Pentagon's own briefers told congressional staff the day before that Iran was not planning to strike U.S. forces "unless Israel attacked Iran first" (see Pentagon told Congress: no first strike).

The President's version

Asked on March 3 whether Israel forced his hand, the President said: "No... Based on the way the negotiation was going, I think [Iran] was going to attack first, and I didn't want that to happen — so if anything, I might've forced Israel's hand" (@RapidResponse47 on X, March 3, 2026, video). Mark Dubowitz, head of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, relayed that Trump "said that I pressured the Israelis to go when I wanted to go" (Dubowitz on X, March 4, 2026).

Even in that version, the decision turns on Israel: Israel was going to strike, and America moved with it. One commenter noted the shift: "when Trump was first asked about why we did it, he said that they knew Israel was going to attack and we needed to hit Iran first" (@Galt11710257 on X, September 4, 2026).

The officials who said it outright

  • Joe Kent, the President's own director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigning March 17, 2026: "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby" (Al Jazeera, March 17, 2026). As quoted later, he said "the narrative & agenda spun by a foreign government- Israel, won the argument & forced us into this war" (@MyTardis_ on X, September 21, 2026). See Joe Kent.
  • Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), as his remarks were collected by a September 2026 post: "Israel forced us into this" (@lamps_apple on X, September 8, 2026).
  • Senator Bernie Sanders, as rendered in a March 2026 post: "A lot of US Middle East policy is dictated by Israel. It was Israel who decided they wanted to go to war" (X search page, March 13, 2026; his own post was not captured).
  • A Gulf diplomat, quoted by The Guardian on March 17, 2026: "We regarded Witkoff and Kushner as Israeli assets that dragged a president into a war he wants to get out of" (as reprinted by JNS, May 3, 2026). The diplomat is unnamed; the line is his or her characterization.
  • The Jewish Telegraphic Agency wrote that Kent's allegations "appeared to echo what even some senior Trump administration officials have suggested: that Israeli officials manipulated Trump into believing both that Iran was a present danger to the United States, and that there was a swift path to victory" (JTA, March 17, 2026).

The denials, set against the record

Once the war went badly, the story changed. Each denial below stands next to the record it contradicts.

  • Rubio, August 2026. A reporter said: "You told us yesterday that Israel was going to strike Iran, which is why we had to intervene." Rubio: "That's not true. Were you there yesterday?" Reporter: "Yes, I asked you the question" (Truth Vault HQ on X, August 27, 2026, video; also here). Compare Rubio's own March 2 words, posted by the White House: "we knew that there was going to be an Israeli action."
  • Netanyahu, around March 19, 2026, at his first English press conference of the war: "I want to close these opening remarks with one other fake news, and that is that Israel somehow dragged the U.S. into a conflict with Iran," and "Does anyone really think that someone can tell President Trump what to do? Come on!" (X news summary, March 19, 2026). Compare the Jerusalem Post, June 22, 2025: Netanyahu and Dermer "succeeded in convincing the US administration to get involved" (Jerusalem Post). Compare also Israeli officials to i24NEWS in June 2025, "asking them to join an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities" (see June 2025).
  • Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, April and July 2026. "This whole thing about the prime minister coming in and dragging the president into this, it's for publicity purposes" (Haaretz, April 12, 2026); later he called the idea "sheer stupidity" (video via @Whiplash437, July 7, 2026). Compare the State Department's legal opinion: "at the request of" Israel.

The simplest test is the one a citizen can run: when the government's lawyers had to write down the reason, the first words they wrote were "at the request of."
