Loosh — The Energy of Human Experience

Loosh is a term coined by Robert Monroe — pioneering out-of-body researcher and founder of The Monroe Institute — to describe a form of energy emitted by living beings during states of heightened emotion. What Is Loosh?​

Loosh is an energy or substance generated by living organisms through the act of experiencing — particularly through emotion, suffering, love, fear, grief, joy, and the biological drama of life, death, and reproduction.

Monroe presented the concept through a parable received during out-of-body experiences. In the parable, an intelligence he called "Someone" created Earth as a garden specifically to cultivate loosh. The garden was seeded with progressively complex life — sea creatures, plants, animals, and finally humans — each producing loosh through the natural intensity of biological existence.

The key elements of the concept:

  • Every intense emotional experience generates loosh — particularly fear, grief, rage, love, ecstasy, and the heightened awareness that comes with physical danger or profound loss

The Two Interpretations​

The loosh concept has generated two fundamentally opposed interpretations that have shaped consciousness discourse for four decades:

The Dark Interpretation — Earth as a Loosh Farm​

In this reading, Earth is a prison planet or energy farm:

  • Non-physical entities — archons, demons, collectors, interdimensional intelligences — designed and maintain human civilization specifically to maximize loosh production
  • Negative experiences (fear, war, poverty, trauma, addiction) are not design failures — they are design features, producing the highest yields of harvestable loosh
  • Reincarnation is a recycling mechanism — souls are returned to the farm after death with memory wiped, ensuring perpetual availability of fresh generators
  • The "light at the end of the tunnel" in near-death experiences may be a lure operated by these entities to redirect consciousness back into the reincarnation cycle
  • Human social structures — governments, media, religions, economic systems — serve as loosh production infrastructure, optimized over centuries for maximum emotional extraction

This interpretation connects directly to Gnostic theology: the archons as energy-farming entities, the Demiurge as the false creator who built the prison, and gnosis (direct experiential knowledge of one's divine nature) as the escape route.

The Light Interpretation — Earth as an Evolutionary School​

  • Loosh is not primarily about suffering — it is about consciousness evolution
  • The purest, most valuable form of loosh is love, not fear — the entire farm metaphor is misleading because it emphasizes the crude extraction while missing what Monroe identified as the most important discovery

Monroe's Original Parable — Key Elements​

Monroe presented the loosh concept as a "rote" (compressed information package received non-verbally during OBEs). The parable's key elements:

  1. Someone — the intelligence that created Earth — needed a reliable source of loosh for unspecified purposes in the non-physical realm
  2. The Garden — Earth was created as a remote experimental garden with a carbon-oxygen cycle to support complex life
  3. Progressive complexity — life forms were seeded in order of increasing loosh yield: sea creatures → plants → animals → humans
  4. The splitting of humans — Someone split humans into male and female "to assure loneliness as they sought to reunite" — creating a permanent engine of longing, bonding, loss, and grief
  5. The discovery of distilled loosh — amid the raw emotional output of the garden, Someone found "a slender fragment of purified and distilled Loosh" emerging from acts of love; this form was exponentially more valuable

Monroe emphasized that the discovery of love as the highest form of loosh reframed the entire operation from predatory to purposeful — though he acknowledged the disturbing implications of the farm metaphor.

The NDE Thread: Near-death experiences raise the question of what happens at death — does consciousness genuinely depart, or is it recycled back into the system? If Earth is a loosh farm, the NDE "tunnel of light" may be the reintegration mechanism.
